A History of Innovation, Dedication and Success

When the Gutiérrez family envisioned the concept for Pollo Campero in 1971, they had no idea people would respond so positively. The first stand sold 700 fried chickens during its first week and recouped the company’s investment after the first month. By the end of the year, restaurants were established in Guatemala and El Salvador.

Campero's Success Goes Global

With the launch of its franchising program in 1994, Pollo Campero was poised to repeat its Latin American success throughout the world. In 2002, the first store opened in downtown Los Angeles and soon beat existing industry sales records. Guests waited in line for up to seven hours to experience the tender, juicy, crunchy chicken that has made Pollo Campero a trademark. In 2004, the first store in Houston served more than 28,000 orders in its first week.

In the last 10 years, Pollo Campero has doubled the number of its transactions. It now has over 6,000 employees who serve more than 75 million customers a year in over 200 restaurants in Central America, Ecuador, Mexico, Spain, China, Indonesia and the United States. When airport locations opened in Guatemala and El Salvador, they quickly reached combined annual sales of $4 million as travelers purchased large amounts of Pollo Campero chicken for friends and relatives in the United States.

Financial Qualifications

The minimum commitment of four locations requires a net worth of $500,000 per restaurant and liquid assets of $250,000 per restaurant. Your financial plan must be complete, and your capital commitment in place, before the development contract can be executed. We require an area development fee of $20,000 per restaurant and a franchise fee of $20,000 per restaurant with a 20-year initial term. The estimated total investment per restaurant ranges from $916,000 to $1,400,000 (exclusive of land acquisition). There is an ongoing royalty of 5.5 percent, and a marketing/advertising commitment of 5 percent.

Pollo Campero makes earnings claims in the Uniform Franchise Offering Circular (UFOC). However, we encourage you to interview our existing franchisees whose names and telephone numbers are provided in the UFOC.

Franchise Support - Franchise Operations

Operations and field support include initial management training and ongoing business consultation; access to our management team for the latest food service innovations; and ongoing support for the entire term of your agreement. We also provide consulting assistance for real estate site selection, design and construction, as well as continuing, comprehensive corporate and on-site training for you and your key managers. We create marketing strategies and materials that will draw more customers to your restaurant.

Initial Investment

Q: Do I have to build multiple locations or can I simply build one?: A: We prefer multi-unit agreements which are typically for four or more locations. Under special circumstances, we may consider smaller agreements. We do not currently offer single store agreements.
Q: What are the financial requirements for becoming a Pollo Campero franchisee?: A: We are looking for individuals who have the resources to open multiple locations. A candidate should have $250,000 liquid assets and $500,000 net worth per location.
Q: What kind of experience do I need to be considered for a Pollo Campero franchise?: A: We are looking for people who share our passion for this concept and are committed to delivering a great experience for our guests. Additionally, qualified candidates should have restaurant experience (preferably multi-unit restaurant and/or multi-unit retail experience), and understand the importance of community involvement. The ideal candidate must also have the ability to build out their selected market with multiple locations.
Q: What is the total investment for a Pollo Campero Franchise?: A: Investments vary depending on locations, market and whether it’s an in-line or freestanding unit. Please refer to the Development Costs in our Franchise Development Documents.
Q: Do you provide financing?: A: While we do not provide direct financing, we will provide you with a list of vendors who are anxious to take your call.
Q: How long does a franchise agreement last?: A: The term of a franchise agreement is 20 years.
Q: Am I given territorial protection?: A: Your Area Development Agreement provides market development rights based on a mutually agreed-upon number of restaurants and build-out schedule.
Q: What are the fees for developing a Pollo Campero?: A: The Area Development fee is $20,000 per location. For example, to preserve exclusivity for a five-restaurant territory, the cost would be $100,000. Separately, upon execution of the individual franchise agreements, there is a $20,000 fee due.
Q: What are Royalty & Advertising Fees?: A: Royalty fees are current 5.5% of Gross Sales. Creative fund fees are 1% of Gross Sales. 4% of Gross Sales must be spent locally for advertising.
Q: How much profit can I expect from my Pollo Campero restaurants?: A: We encourage prospective franchisees to conduct significant due diligence prior to committing to any new business venture. Existing Pollo Campero franchisees are an excellent source for answering questions about operations, marketing, finances, etc. The amount of profit or loss is dependent on a number of factors including the ability of the franchisee to manage the business, drive sales volume and control operating costs. Names and phone numbers of existing franchisees are available by request. Additionally, we do provide historical data regarding our restaurants in our Franchise Development Document.

Restaurant Site Selection and Construction

Q: Does Pollo Campero help with site selection?: Yes. We will provide the guidance you need to ensure the site you select meets the Pollo Campero site requirements concerning the demographics, traffic counts and visibility.
Q: What size specifications are required for a Pollo Campero restaurant?: A: We recommend free-standing restaurant that are 2,600-2,800 square feet. We also specify in-line locations that are approximately 2,400 square feet.
Q: What kind of support can I expect during the real estate and construction process?: A: We share mapping, competition and demographic data with our franchisees. We also provide prototypical construction plans to each developing franchisee. Once you have a potential site on which to develop, you will be required to complete a Site Application package. Once the Real Estate Site Approval Committee receives the completed site package, it will be reviewed to determine acceptability of the site for a new location.
Q: How soon can my restaurant be in operation once I have been accepted as a Franchisee?: A: Identifying your site is the determining factor. Once a site is approved after development of the construction documents, restaurant construction can be completed in approximately 120-130 days.
Q: Do I buy my equipment from Pollo Campero?: A: No, we have approved vendors that you can work with to provide you your restaurant equipment.

Restaurant Training & Operations

Q: Do I receive training from Pollo Campero?: A: Yes, Franchisees and their designated managers must attend and successfully complete a six-week training program in one of our company training restaurants. The cost of this initial training is included in your Franchise Fee. Franchisees pay their own travel costs, and those of their designated managers, for transportation, lodging & meals.
Q: What other assistance do I receive prior to opening my Pollo Campero Restaurant?: A: In addition to your initial management training period, your Franchise Business Consultant will provide and review with you our restaurant pre-opening manual that will take you step by step through the opening process Your Business consultant and a Pollo Campero opening team will also assist you with properly setting up the restaurant for business and assist in the orientation and training of your team.
Q: What form of continuing operational support will I receive?: A: You will receive a confidential Pollo Campero Operations Manual along with other manuals covering the many important facets of your restaurant operation. As the manuals are updated, revisions will be made available to you. You will also receive periodic visits by your Franchise Business Consultant, who will offer advice and counsel on the system elements such as quality control, service, advertising, marketing, P & L management, & training. Additionally, you will have access to all of the support functions at our Restaurant Support Center.
Q: Do I receive guidance on the purchase of foods and supplies?: A: Yes. Our high quality and proprietary products are essential to our concept. Our Purchasing Department has established an approved list of items and suppliers available for purchase through our independent distributors.
